Electric tow tractors (also called tuggers) are vehicles used to tow trailers or wheeled carts horizontally in factories, warehouses, and industrial areas. Unlike forklifts, tow tractors do not lift loads high but focus on transporting multiple packages simultaneously on fixed routes, helping reduce manual labor and increase internal logistics productivity. ICD supplies standard electric tow tractors and manufactures custom electric cargo carts and tow tractors to order.
How are tow tractors different from forklifts and electric cargo carts?
| Equipment | Main function | When used |
|---|---|---|
| Electric tow tractor | Tows trailers, carts, pallets on flatbed trailers along fixed routes | Continuous transport of multiple packages between warehouses, production lines, and shipping areas |
| Forklift | Lifts, lowers, and stacks pallets onto racks and trucks | Needed for high stacking and loading/unloading at endpoints |
| Electric cargo cart with bin | Carries goods directly on its bin | Small, light items, short distances, when self-transport without towing is required |
Many factories combine all three: forklifts load goods onto trailers, tow tractors run main routes in a milk-run model, and cargo carts serve isolated points. ICD can advise on a coordinated plan if you provide a floor plan diagram.
Choose a tow tractor by load capacity and driving method
| Vehicle Group | Operation Type | Common Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Light (from a few hundred kg to about 1.5 tons) | Pedestrian or stand-on operation, small turning radius | Towing component carts, postal goods, narrow aisles between shelves |
| Medium (approx. 2 to 5 tons) | Sit-down operation, larger battery, higher speed | Material transport between workshops within a campus |
| Heavy (over 5 tons) | Sit-down operation, towing long train sets | Large-scale plants, heavy machinery, yard areas |
The load levels above are for reference grouping only. Actual towing capacity depends on the total mass of the train set and cargo, route gradient, floor type, and number of start-stop cycles. Therefore, ICD always calculates based on your specific transport route rather than selecting a general figure.
6 questions to answer before ordering a tow tractor
- Total towing loadCargo weight plus trailer weight, calculated for routes with inclines
- Distance/shiftDetermines battery capacity and charging frequency
- Aisle widthChoose compact or sit-down vehicle, turning radius
- Floor and slopesTire type, brakes, and motor power
- SafetyBrakes, lights, horn, area-specific speed limits
- Power sourceBattery or lithium, charging location and time
Many incidents when towing trailers come from couplings and brakes, not from the engine. Check the hitch pin, hitch height relative to the trailer, and speed in crowded areas before each shift. ICD provides inspection procedures during handover.
Custom Manufacturing of Tow Trucks
When available vehicles on the market do not match the site layout, ICD can manufacture to order: cargo box dimensions, hitch height, enclosed or open cabin, battery type, and safety features. ICD’s workshop handles everything from design to assembly, then conducts test runs at the workshop before delivery. The photo set above shows some 1-ton, 2-ton tow trucks and technical vehicles ICD has manufactured.

Frequently asked questions about electric tow trucks
How many tons can an electric tow truck pull?
Depending on the model, from a few hundred kg to several tons or more. You need to calculate the total weight of the entire train of trailers and goods on the actual route, then choose a vehicle with surplus pulling capacity, rather than just comparing the load capacity number.
How long can the vehicle run in one shift?
It depends on battery capacity, towing load, slope, and number of stops and starts. Please report the distance per shift and number of shifts per day so ICD can choose the appropriate battery configuration.
Is lithium battery worth investing in for tow trucks?
If the vehicle runs multiple shifts or needs to charge opportunistically between shifts, lithium batteries usually have advantages in charging time and lifespan. If it only runs one shift and has overnight charging time, lead-acid batteries are a cost-saving option for initial investment.
Does ICD manufacture tow trucks according to custom drawings?
Yes. ICD manufactures electric cargo vehicles and electric tow trucks according to requirements on size, load capacity, and operating conditions of each factory.
